This is one time where I will wave my ‘crucible’ rule about always writing on the train because it is noteworthy today that there were no trains, though it would have been nice if that fact had been published on the MBTA website before I ventured out into a minus 13 degree chill (-not- windchill — actual temperature). By far this is the coldest morning of my Boston commute, and perhaps the coldest morning in 20 years.

I wore extra layers of gloves, scarves, but too late realized how I should have gone with wool socks and thicker long johns. I also realize now that I was endangering myself a bit by wearing a cotton t-shirt, which can hold sweat against the skin drawing heat away once my fast walk had ended. But I was only outdoors for an hour and this was not likely to be a hypothermic killer.

In the end I managed my frozen hour intact and in good health with the minor exception of my toes numbed up a bit while I stood hunched in one spot at the station for 20 minutes before heading home.

I’d rather have made it into Boston for all of this trouble, though.
